The 5-day event, in which the master tailors were able to visit our historic wool mill and delve into the rich culture of the Piedmontese textile industry, culminated with a Gala Dinner at the picturesque setting of the historic Palazzo Gromo Losa.

An event where the tailors were able to network with each other and with industry experts and enjoy one last magical night before returning home.

Recollections are the imprints of the past, registered in our consciousness, reflected in our memory and revealed in our dreams. 

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 and Accademia IUAD, two Italian excellences, came together for the leading project of Graduate 2022, now a fixed, unmissable appointment at the Accademia della Moda which has its headquarters in Naples and Milan. The theme of the Graduate project for this year was Memory – a topic which is relevant as never before in this, our period, when it seems that survival is increasingly about the ability to forget.

Trame di Memoria: the topic of Memory

The theme of this year’s event takes its inspiration from psychoanalysis which was developed for the in-depth study of memory and the art of forgetting. The starting point was the father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud, leading to the sources of classical mythology, and to more recent expressions in contemporary art. The subject of memory, of remembering and forgetting runs through all the arts and, as a result of the Graduate project, culminates at the subject of fashion in our times, incarnated by textiles. 

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 fabrics encompass in just a square piece the essence itself of the artistic dimension of the brand, the concept of Made in Italy, creativity, passion and the commemoration of an ancient tradition. 

In the exhibition and the students’ works, the aim is to bear witness to the intrinsic sense of memory, giving importance to the emotions and feelings which they generate, and which have moved into the background with the advances of 3.0 technology and AI. The works included in the exhibition are designed to emphasise a more concrete, more emotional world, made up of feelings and sensations; which is why the installations are realised using fabrics produced by the wool mill.

Between memory and poetic vocation, each of us should design a fashion made up of lyrical transformations.

From 12th to 14th July 2022 Milano Unica will take place, one of the most important events for companies working in the textiles, clothing and fashion sectors. On this occasion, Lanificio F.lli Cerruti presents its new Autumn/Winter 2023 collection. And in doing so, has chosen a completely unique project of its type.

Crossing: at the frontier

Every collection brings with it a sign of the times. We are living in times of both great and small changes, where we are always more than we were before, and on the threshold of what is still to come. In constant flux. The Lanificio F.lli Cerruti A/W 2023 finds its stimulus in this idea, inspired by the concept of frontiers, the idea of a no-man’s land, taking its cue from the literary experience of the author Gloria E. Anzaldúa, who wrote Borderlands. 

The warp and weft of Cerruti fabrics assume the character of a fertile land in which to transfer thoughts originating from the exchange of ideas with great tailors, international maisons, but also with upcoming couturiers. 

The concept of Crossing departs from this idea: that the collection becomes a space of work, a place in which Lanificio F.lli Cerruti invites everybody to add something which “is not yet”. The fabrics become bridges connecting diverse creativities and sensibilities, symbols of change of perspective and of the eradication of differences. 

Crossing Layers, Crossing Stories, Crossing Threads, Crossing Worlds, Crossing Lines, Crossing Horizons and Crossing Time are the 7 keywords to define this A/W 23 collection which can be seen during the 35th edition of Milano Unica. 

The Ranges 

Also for this collection, Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 proposes three ranges: Main, ITravel and Flow. 

Main is the incarnation of the world of more formal elegance and it takes its inspiration from classic fabrics which have been reinterpreted in a new way with designs and fancies downplaying their classicality but emphasising the more fun and playful side which luxury items can and must also have. 

ITravel, the wool mill’s icon, is the range of highly-performant fabrics able to withstand different situations at any longitude or latitude. This line is predominantly distinguished by the water-repellent fabrics. 

Flow, the range which acts as an incubator for ideas and creativity at the wool mill, marks a revolution in the textile world: sophisticated fluidity interwoven with the most visionary contemporary spirit to define new horizons of elegance.

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 presents the new Spring/Summer 2023 collection at the 34th edition of Milano Unica, in the name of evolution and the constant movement of ideas and opinions as a challenge which the times we live in require us to face, shaping our abilities in different, dynamic and more flexible contexts.

“MOVE” is the keyword of a collection which changes and evolves as a liquid changes shape according to the container it is poured into; a way of transforming our daily lives and of sending a social message of resilience, of the capacity to adapt to change. And the will to change.

The Spring/Summer 2023 fabrics

“MOVE” represents Lanificio Cerruti’s response to our times, its challenges and changes, to the evolution of the fashion industry and society.

Fabrics of the new collection interpret and narrate movement and its compositions, in the creation of a rhythm of harmonies and contrasts, of vibration and stasis which are woven into a truly dynamic collection designed to satisfy every moment of our daily lives. The three lines within the collection – Main, ITravel, Flow – have a leitmotif connecting them – that of stretch – softer in Main and ITravel, more denoted and decided in Flow. 

MAIN

Main incarnates the world of more formal elegance and takes its inspiration from classic fabrics reinterpreted in a new way, with designs and fancies that play down the classic aspect and emphasise the more fun and playful side of luxury. It responds to the demands of those who, with the new idea of change, wish to leave classic tradition behind them and have something more unique and exclusive. A “new classic” that is not common, with natural materials in summer blends such as linens and cottons with vertical motifs and interrupted chalk stripes influencing each other and leading to unexpected results.

Fabrics in summery colours, with uneven backgrounds and jacquard designs as a consequence of the irregularity of the yarns which add up to those of the weaves, always creating interesting looks. A jacket with the natural stretch of the fibres provides comfort and practicality not to mention the pleasure of the coolness required for the season. Such as in seersucker, created on jacquard looms in models moving from the more traditional to the more contemporary. 

ITRAVEL

ITravel, icon of the wool mill, is the range of highly performant fabrics able to resist in different situations, in any place or latitude or longitude. Jackets with textured backgrounds create diagonal “knitted” effects thus creating a versatile proposal designed as always to accompany the modern man in the summer season. Treatments for stain and water resistance enhance these fabrics and improve their performance. 

FLOW

Flow, the line where the ideas and creativity of the wool mill are gestated, signals a revolution in textiles; a sophisticated fluidity is interwoven with a more visionary, contemporary spirit to define new horizons of elegance. The summer fabrics are interpreted in a fluid – gender free – way to guarantee maximum versatility in terms of style combined with increased elasticity as a result of the combination of three-dimensional yarns coupled with non-stretch yarns. 

The fabrics are created using a shuttle process, more sustainable than jersey, where the yarns can be reused to avoid waste. The designs on double weave are made three-dimensional by the effect of the reverse side: the two weaves exchange in nuances and overlaps.

The fancies are wide-ranged and the emblematic design for the collection is gingham, interpreted in flat and three-dimensional versions. Also the bayadere with its fresh stripes is visible in the seersuckers. These fabrics, with their unique graphics, explode in colours reaching from yellows, to pinks and sky blues, like a painter’s palette. The jersey plays with jacquard weaves with three-dimensional effects, distinguished by its selection of colours using multi-coloured tones and seersuckers in sandy hues, whites and all the variety of browns.

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 and Barbanera have started a collaboration bringing together fashion and textiles in a unique project dedicated to Italian excellence and which unites modernity with the artisanship of Made in Italy. The partnership between the mill and the Italian brand has resulted in a special, double-breasted overcoat in alpaca, with the name MURAT.

Barbanera is an Italian fashion brand run since 2011 by the brothers Sergio and Sebastiano Guardi, and Alessandro Pagliacci. The brand focuses on the production of high-quality shoes and garments, all strictly Made in Italy and created by a trusted team of artisans. Their image has revolutionised the sartorial world and the creative director, Sergio Guardi, has practically redefined and reinterpreted the American look while remaining faithful to the tastes and the virtues of Italian style and know-how, as can also be seen in their decision to collaborate with Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881.

Also this year, at the Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte di Biella, “Arte al Centro” has taken place. The review, in its 23rd edition, is dedicated to exhibitions and encounters which talk about artistic practices to transform social contest, realised by Cittadellarte and the network of international players who have come together over the years. Amongst the various projects of “Arte al centro”, which takes place over an entire year, Lanificio F.lli Cerruti is participating in the second edition of the artistic project called CirculART, or to give it its full name CirculART II – Art Interwoven with the Supply Chain, which started on 30th October in the industrial archaeological sites restored by Cittadellarte.

The new edition of CirculART II

The second edition of CirculART presents itself as a “project for social renewal, the result of a pathway to integration and inclusion in the worlds of art and of industry”, which is manifested in the exhibition opened on 30th October. Sustainability and the practice of artistic and economic activities which are greener and more sustainable, also with regard to fashion, in communion with nature, are the focus of the project, and they have become even more relevant in this period of recovery.

Through their works, companies and artists talk about how innovation can be aware in a sector such as fashion, which needs more than ever to enter into a symbiosis with the natural and human resources to be found on our planet. CirculART II is the point of departure for a new way aimed at rediscovering an equilibrium between business, society and nature, as a call for action. 

Fashion of sustainable quality

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti supplied its fabrics for the project, with the aim of taking up contact with a different vision of fashion, at an artistic, conceptual level, but most of all at a sustainable and inclusive level, closer to the planet and the people who want to develop new behaviours in terms of clothing and the way it is produced – a vision which is more aware, more attentive and circular.

There are four artists involved in CirculART II – Silvia Giovanardi, Ryts Monet, Giulia Pellegrini and Marcello Pipitone, who were invited to collaborate with different textile companies including Lanificio F.lli Cerruti. In four original works of art, the unprecedented and visionary “interpretation of the industrial reality will serve to delineate and reveal new design paradigms based on a circular economy and ethics”. The art on show does not have the purpose of inspiring only the textile industry, but rather all production sectors, “to realign their activities with the ultimate promise of working together: responding to the real needs of humanity.”

A truly unique, artistic dialogue is created between people and the fashion industry, especially that part of it which has chosen to question the social and environmental issues which involve it. The result – and the mid- and long-term objectives – are to create a supply chain with a sustainable, traceable and certificated production cycle based on recycled fibres, and environmentally-friendly and high-quality textiles which create a balance between nature and society into which art can be introduced. The artists / fashion designers “have become the unexpected lens through which the public can observe textile production processes, generating new behaviours towards the products bought by the public.”

To celebrate the 140 years lived under the banner of quality, Italian excellence and passion for that true, authentic taste inherent in knowing how to do things well, Lanificio F.lli Cerruti dal 1881 has taken up a partnership with the brand of Umbrian origins, Pettinesi dal 1486. This brand belonging to the Chiacchiarini family has its roots in the heart of Italy, in the ancient village of Pettino, encircled by the Umbrian Apennines and surrounded by forests with a wealth of natural pastures.

A unique wool and centuries-old heritage

A partnership which speaks of genuineness and excellence and of the rediscovery and valorisation of local communities which, above all in Italy, are capable of giving us not only products and raw materials, but also unique experience.

In this evocative landscape, Lanificio Cerruti has decided to collaborate with the historic breeders of Pettino, with their 700-year-old traditions, for the procurement of the typical wools of this area from the Sopravissana sheep, one of the few Italian breeds deriving from Merinos. For some years, this breed has been becoming somewhat more common thanks to a number of keen breeders who have created a system and who are committed to reinstating them both with local and national initiatives as well as with actions taken at an international level.

This partnership gives Lanificio Cerruti the possibility of creating completely no-mulesing and 100% traceable wools; timeless fabrics which reflect the environment from which they originate with an important history made up of traditions and culture.

A genuine and sustainable Italian story: the event

To celebrate its first 140 years, Lanificio Cerruti invited journalists and lovers of the brand to discover these ancient lands, with their traditions and their love for the world of wool. 

It was a real voyage, a 360 ° experience in a new world, alive, sustainable and extraordinarily Italian, and enhanced and made even more interesting by the participation of Ciro Pistarino, founder of VOCATIVE, the first Italian tailor’s shop to be 100% eco-sustainable and traceable. A bespoke, sustainable event, decidedly oriented toward the future which goes further than just the creation of a suit, and which, as a result of Ciro Pistarino’s know-how, allows us to discover the taste for true artisanal “Made in Italy” skills. In an exclusive for the guests at Pettino, he carried out made-to-measure fittings with fabrics produced using the Sopravissana wool.

Lanificio Cerruti and Pettinesi share traditions which go back centuries and an authentic, ethically-sustainable vision for a responsible future in which the indisputable protagonists will be local communities and territories. This is why it was Francesca Chiacchiarini, who is the fist-line manager of the family business, to accompany the guests in the narration of the Pettinesi wool. A wool which is 100% Italian, and, as with all Italian excellence, it is full of style, elegance and personality bringing with it not only history and culture, but also technology and innovation.

Suit fabrics with uneven backgrounds and irregular jacquard designs, jackets and overcoats in wool and silk where the natural elasticity of the fibres give comfort and function, not to mention the pleasant addition of cashmere.

ITRAVEL

Lanificio F.lli Cerruti has always supported emerging designers, and the collaboration with Flavia La Rocca, which started some time ago, is no exception. A new development is now added to this partnership with the launch of the designer’s circular fashion project on Kickstarter.

Kickstarter represents a shop window of great importance for the transformation of dreams and ideas into reality; this is also valid for the fashion world, especially for young designers who, with different, innovative ideas and by thinking outside the box, are trying to create a new concept of fashion. Like Flavia La Rocca who, as she explains on the project page, proposes “new behaviour with regard to clothing. A sustainable way of dressing, which is contemporary and modular.”

A vision of the fashion future in line with that of the wool mill, increasingly connected with sustainable projects for a future in the sector with less waste and more awareness of our impact on the health of the planet and its inhabitants.

The project by Flavia La Rocca in collaboration with the Lanificio

Little Black Dress is the sustainable, circular and modular project on which Flavia La Rocca, winner of the Green Carpet Fashion Awards 2019 for the best emerging designer, has been working for some time and on which the Lanificio has collaborated. It consists of a modular system of garments which, in various combinations and the matching of different “modules” enables the creation of 4 tops, 2 skirts and 5 suits. A way of having more solutions available with the same quantity of fabric and garments, which can then be integrated with new pieces according to the new collections without having to throw away old pieces. 

As Flavia says, “Modularity is the possibility to renew a garment by mixing it with a new module of future collections instead of throwing it away, thereby prolonging the life of the product. With this idea I would like to increase awareness of how to take care of the items of clothing we already have.”

The materials which are carefully selected in collaboration with the Lanificio F.lli Cerruti naturally also fall within this perspective of attention and sustainability. The modules are in fact created using a special, unique fabric which was exclusively produced for the project: a blend of mulesing-free virgin wool which is completely traceable and the eco-botanical version of silk TENCELTM Luxe, the first cellulose yarn obtained from sustainable wood sources. It is a black jacquard reminiscent of the bark of a tree to further underline the sustainability of the project.

As a result of the characteristics of these two fibres, the fabric is seasonless, and completely biodegradable; it comes from nature and returns to nature.

“I have had the good fortune to work directly together with the Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti 1881 team to create the perfect fabric for the Little Modular Black Dress. Thank you to this Italian company with its incredible history which opened its doors to me and made available its know-how and its structures for an innovative project such as this.”

Havana Cognac, the classic Scarosso moccasin is decorated in one of the most significant fabrics by Lanificio F.lli Cerruti: Oxygen Summer, conceived mainly only for jackets but which today has become the elegant detail with a traditional flavour, only with a modern touch for a shoe that needs no introduction. 

The Scarosso Oxford model, Saxony Brown, on the other hand, is united with another Lanificio Cerruti fabric: Winterissimo, a flannel jacquard reinterpreted for the gentleman of other times, who does not want to surrender the style of his personality.
